Some people arrive in Morro Jable at the end of December with a suitcase full of clothes they won’t be wearing. And there are those who, on Christmas Eve, instead of being cooped up waiting for dinner, spend the morning on deck with the sun on their faces and their feet bare.

Both are Christmas. It’s just that the second one isn’t forgotten.

A plan that breaks with the usual festive tradition

Christmas has its usual routine: long meals, endless after-dinner chats and the same old conversations with the same in-laws. Heading out to sea breaks that routine in an instant. The whole family on a boat, with the Jandía Natural Park gliding past on one side, and no one watching the clock.

It works just as well whether you’re travelling as a couple, a group of friends who happen to be on the island at the same time, or if you’re spending your holidays here and looking for a day that stands out from the rest. And yes, you can sail in short sleeves: December here is nothing like it is back home.

An honest word of advice from someone who goes out every day: it’s always a bit cooler out at sea than on land, so pop a light jacket in your rucksack. You can find more details in the guide on what to take on a boat trip.

Food is also part of the party

At this time of year, good food is a given, and it’s no different on board. Each boat has its own menu, prepared by top chefs from Jandía, and drinks are on an all-you-can-drink basis throughout the trip. Toasting with a cold drink whilst anchored off the coast feels a bit like an early celebration. We’ll tell you all about what’s on offer to eat and drink on board.

And then there’s the crew

This is what we hear most often when people get off the boat, and it’s even more noticeable at Christmas. Lots of people come from further afield – sometimes from far away from home – during the festive season, and what they find is a team that looks after them, explains what they’re seeing and is genuinely delighted to have them on board. It’s all about the experience of a trip with us, and it’s hard to describe unless you’ve been there yourself.

The two days we didn’t go out

To avoid any disappointment when planning your trip: we don’t sail on 25 December or 1 January. These are the only two days when the crew stay at home with their families. For the rest of the festive season, including 24 and 31 December, we sail as normal.

Book in good time and we’ll meet at the quay

A handy tip: holiday dates fill up well in advance, so if you’ve decided on a specific day, don’t leave it until the last minute. That’s when the island is at its busiest and places go in a flash.

You get off the plane in January, still wearing your coat out of habit, and within ten minutes you realise you don’t need it. It’s at that moment – when you’re taking off layers in the airport car park – that you realise why people go sailing here almost every day of the year.

Winter here is nothing like the one you left behind at home

Whilst half of Europe wakes up to frost on their windscreens, in the south of Fuerteventura you can enjoy winter in short sleeves. The sun is shining, the temperature is just right, and it’s absolutely lovely on board. This isn’t just any old off-season trip: it’s the same old plan, but in a different light.

What are sea conditions like in January and February?

The southern part of Jandía is sheltered, and it shows: for much of the winter, the sea is calm at dawn and the sailing is superb. On some days the wind is strong and we decide on the spot, because the sea has the final say, but we go out every month of the year. If you’re interested in the details, we’ll tell you which months are the windiest in Fuerteventura.

What about the bathroom? Won’t the water be freezing?

That’s the question we’re asked most often by those who visit in winter. The Atlantic off the Canary Islands doesn’t suffer the same cold spells as the Mediterranean: the temperature here is pleasant all year round, so a dip in the sea is still appealing in January. That said, here’s a tip from someone who sails every day: take a light jacket with you for the return journey, because it gets chilly out at sea even when the sun is shining (it’s something to take with you on a boat trip).

Fewer people on board, more sea for you

There’s one advantage that hardly anyone mentions: in winter, sailing is a more peaceful experience. There are fewer crowds on the quay, the decks are less crowded, and you get the feeling that you have the boat a little more to yourself. It’s the same trip, but enjoyed with a greater sense of tranquillity.

Dolphins don’t go on holiday

Cetaceans remain in Jandía during the winter; it’s their home all year round. And there’s one thing we’ve noticed trip after trip: with the water a little cooler, it’s easier to spot large, playful groups. We can never guarantee it, as they’re wild animals, but winter is by no means a bad time of year. Here’s where and how to see them.

See you at the quay, also in January

If you’re spending the winter in Fuerteventura and were wondering whether a boat trip makes sense at this time of year, now you know: sunshine, calm seas, a lovely swim and cetaceans in their natural habitat. Take a look at our boats and choose the one that’s right for you. We set sail from the Morro Jable jetty in Fuerteventura all year round (we’re only closed on 25 December and 1 January).

You jump off the boat, pop your head out, put on your goggles and dip your face back in. And that’s when something curious happens: the noise from the deck disappears in an instant. All you can hear is your own breathing. There’s another island down there, and hardly anyone thinks of it when they book a trip.

We dropped anchor off the southern coast, where the seabed alternates between light-coloured sand and volcanic rock. It is this mixture that makes the view so striking: the sand reflects the light and the water takes on that turquoise hue which, from the deck, looks as though it has been retouched.

Life is concentrated on the rock, because that is where there is shelter and food.

ENTER AND DISCOVER THE EXPERIENCE OF SAILING WITH US IN FUERTEVENTURA

The ones who are almost always hanging about

If you stand still for a minute, they start to appear. The salemas are usually the first to show up, swimming in shoals with those yellow stripes running along their bodies. The sea bream are more scattered, silvery in colour and with a dark patch near their tails. And then there’s the Canarian wrasse, which is the one that catches everyone’s eye because of its colour. The fulas, dark and small, dart amongst the rocks without straying too far. None of this is out of the ordinary, nor does it require any luck: this is the local wildlife, the species that live here all year round.

And every now and then, a surprise

Other times, something unexpected turns up: a stingray gliding leisurely across the sandy seabed, a large school of fish swimming past, or – if you’re really lucky – a turtle surfacing to breathe near the boat. That’s not up to us, and that’s why it’s all the more enjoyable. It’s the same as with dolphins and whales: nobody here promises anything.

El equipo lo ponemos nosotros

There’s no need to lug your goggles and snorkel tube all the way from the hotel. The Magic Dreams carries snorkelling kit on board, so when we drop anchor, all you have to do is put it on and take a dip. The swim and paddleboards are also available at the same time; we’ll tell you all about what the stopover is like on our newest catamaran.

VIEW THE MAGIC DREAMS TOUR

Four things that make a difference to the experience

Breathe calmly and keep still: the less you move about, the closer the fish will come. Don’t touch the seabed or the rocks – not least because there are sea urchins, and you won’t want to take that ‘souvenir’ home with you. Put sun cream on your back, as that’s the part that gets burnt whilst you’re looking down. And if it’s your first time, have a go near the boat’s ladder first. If you want the full details on what to bring, you’ll find them in this guide.

See you on the coast of Fuerteventura

Many people board the boat thinking about the dolphins and get off talking about what they saw when they looked over the side. It’s the quietest moment of the day and, for quite a few, the one they remember most.

We’re at anchor, everyone’s in the water, and suddenly someone shouts from the bow. It’s not a dolphin. It’s a small head popping up to breathe a few metres from the hull; it stays there for a moment, looking around, and then slowly dives back down.

It happens almost every day. And the funny thing is, we never go out looking for them.

Several species live in the waters around the Canary Islands, the most common being the loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta. It is the one with a brown shell and a large head, which is almost always seen floating on the surface basking in the sun before diving back down.

They turn up when you’re not looking for them

We set out to sail and keep an eye out for dolphins or whales. The turtles turn up on their own, without warning, almost always whilst we’re stopping for a swim or as we sail along the coast. The same goes for the manta rays, which also make an appearance from time to time.

That’s why people love them so much: they’re not part of the script. Nobody promises them to you when you book, and yet they end up being the story you tell when you get back to the hotel.

A story that began in Cofete

Here’s something many people don’t know, and it’s a story that involves the whole of Fuerteventura. On Cofete beach, work has been underway for years on a project to reintroduce the loggerhead turtle, spearheaded by the Canary Islands Government using eggs from Cape Verde. The species had not nested on the islands for nearly three hundred years.

And there’s one detail that gives you goosebumps: turtles practise philopatry, which means that as adults they tend to return to the beach where they were born to lay their eggs. That means that some of those that grew up on the sands of Cofete may one day return to Fuerteventura. When you’re sailing around here and see one pop up, it’s hard not to think about it.

A turtle hospital in our very own harbour

At the port of Morro Jable, just a few metres from where we moored, is the Fuerteventura Island Council’s Sea Turtle Recovery and Conservation Centre. Turtles that are found injured or entangled are taken there, treated and, once they have recovered, released back into the sea.

Admission is free, although it’s a good idea to check the opening times beforehand as they vary depending on the season. If you’re in the area with children, it’s a short outing that’s well worth it.

Two who came with us

Of all the ones we’ve seen, there are two that the crew remembers in particular. One had a cracked leg and wasn’t moving very well. We lifted it carefully on board and placed it in the centre so it could be treated.

The other one had a shell covered in growths, right near its neck, which was preventing it from swimming properly. Same story: off to the centre, cleaned up, nursed back to health, and back into the Atlantic once it was ready. Finishing the day like that really turns anyone’s day around.

If you ever come across an injured turtle or one that has become stranded on the beach, it is best not to touch it and to call the emergency services so that the professionals can deal with it.

When it happens, it’s best to do nothing

We treat them in the same way as we do cetaceans: we don’t chase them, we don’t touch them and we don’t invade their space. It’s the same idea that sums up our Blue Boat code. If it decides to stay near the boat for a while, you enjoy the moment; if it swims away, you let it go.

See you at the quay in Morro Jable

We can’t promise you’ll see a turtle, just as we don’t promise dolphins. What we do know is that this stretch of the Atlantic is teeming with life and that no two trips are ever the same.

A fin appears in the distance and everyone on deck jumps to their feet at once. That moment – with the murmur of voices and mobile phones being pulled out of pockets – is what defines the sort of excursion you’ve chosen. Because that’s when the captain decides: whether to head towards them or do exactly the opposite.

We stopped. The Atlantic is not an aquarium; it is someone else’s home where we are guests, and coming across a pod of bottlenose dolphins or seeing a pilot whale blow is not a right: it is a privilege.

What does it really mean to be a ‘Blue Ship’?

In the Canary Islands, whale watching is strictly regulated, but we go one step further. For our captains and guides, the protocol can be summarised in three pillars that we apply every mile:

Respectful distance: We never force an encounter. If a group of dolphins decides to come closer to play in the wake of the Magic Dolphin or Magic Select, it is because they feel safe. If not, we maintain a safe distance so as not to interfere with their feeding or resting routes.

Silence and calm: Noise is the greatest form of pollution in the ocean. Whenever the wind allows us to do so on catamarans such as the Magic Dreams or Magic Deluxe, we turn off the engines and hoist the sails. It is in this absolute silence that the connection with nature becomes real.

No chasing or touching: By law and ethics, it is strictly forbidden to do this with cetaceans in the Canary Islands. They are the ones who come to see us, and we observe them from a distance and with respect, without engines and without invading their space.

The first thing we do is switch off the engine

When we spot a pod, we slow down and switch off the engine at the safety distance specified by the regulations. We do not head towards them, nor do we circle them or cut them off. We stay still and let the sea get on with its business. All we do is switch off the engine.

From there, it’s up to them. Often they approach the boat out of curiosity, swim around it and play for a while: that moment can’t be bought or forced. Other times they carry on their way without paying us any attention, so we continue our journey through the area. We’re telling it as it is, because they’re wild animals and sightings are never guaranteed.

Why don’t we carry radar or sonar?

We’re often asked this, and the answer is that we don’t use any technology that emits noise or vibrations underwater. Noise is one of the worst forms of ocean pollution. What we rely on is more ancient: a change in the colour of the water, the frantic flight of shearwaters, a particular current. We’ve been exploring the coast of Jandía since 1995, and it’s this craft that leads us to them. We explain this in more detail in ‘How we read the sea to find dolphins’.

Silence, candles and distance

Whenever the wind is favourable, we switch off the engines and hoist the sails on catamarans such as the Magic Dreams or the Magic Deluxe. It is in that silence that the connection with what lies before you becomes real.

Chasing or touching them is prohibited by law in the Canary Islands, and for us it is also against our ethical principles. Swimming with wild dolphins is not permitted either, and we think that’s as it should be.

A guide who explains what you’re looking at

Our guides aren’t just there to point out where the fin is. They’ll explain why this area is a Special Area of Conservation and why the deep trenches off the Morro Jable lighthouse are such a good habitat for these species.

We’d also like to offer a couple of tips to help you take your photos and videos calmly, patiently and respectfully. And here’s a piece of advice we often repeat: put your mobile down for a moment and look at them with your own eyes. When you realise that dolphin is looking after its calf or hunting in a group, the way you look at the ocean changes.

Respect is also evident on board

Our responsibility doesn’t end with the sighting. We have phased out single-use cups and replaced them with reusable polypropylene ones, so that no waste ends up on the seabed.

We also offer a pick-up service in Costa Calma, Esquinzo, Morro Jable and Jandía, which not only makes your day easier but also consolidates journeys and reduces the carbon footprint of those who come sailing with us.

What to look out for before booking any trip

If you’re comparing excursions, there are tell-tale signs that reveal a lot about how things are run on board. Don’t let anyone promise you a guaranteed sighting, because that’s not up to us. Make sure the boat displays the ‘Barco Azul’ badge. Ensure there’s a crew member on hand to explain what you’re seeing. And above all, make sure the boat stops rather than chasing after fins. Book any trip

The sea gives it back to you

Sailing ethically has a reward you might not expect: the sightings are more beautiful. An animal that doesn’t feel hunted reveals its true nature, and offers moments that no chase could ever provide.

The dolphins and whales are already there. We’ll simply take you to see them the right way, setting off from the port of Morro Jable in Fuerteventura.

At the Morro Jable quay, amongst white-hulled boats and fibreglass vessels, there’s one that stands out from afar: hand-crafted wood, tall masts and that air of a ship that has sailed far and wide. It’s the schooner Aphrodite. And although many know it for its sunsets, by day it offers a different experience that’s well worth mentioning.

Book your place on our Aphrodite tour

What changes when you sail a wooden boat

Stepping aboard a gulet is nothing like stepping aboard a catamaran. The wood creaks a little, the deck smells different, and everything encourages you to slow down. You’re not boarding a mass-produced boat: you’re boarding one that’s been hand-built, piece by piece, in Turkey.

When the wind is on our side, we hoist the sails and the engine takes a back seat. That’s when the best part of the day begins: moving forward, hearing nothing but the water and the fabric tightening. It’s not always possible, as it depends on the wind and the state of the sea, but when it happens, it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

A covered area and plenty of space to stretch out, sunbathe with a drink and listen to the sound of the sea in Fuerteventura

Measuring around 20 metres in length and 7 metres in beam, the Aphrodite has a spacious deck, designed for lounging in the sun and watching the volcanic coastline of Jandía glide by at a leisurely pace. It can accommodate up to sixty-five people, so it’s a good choice if you’re travelling in a group, but it never feels cramped.

There’s music on board, although there’s no DJ here (that’s for the evening). The nice thing is that it often ends up being someone from the group’s playlist: if you ask the captain and he’s happy with it, you get to choose the music.

A quick dip, and when you come out, the table is laid out facing the Jandía coastline

Halfway through the four-hour trip, we’ll stop so you can take a dip in the Atlantic, with its crystal-clear water that’s so addictive. By the time you get out, the crew will have the table all set.

It’s a proper meal: Mediterranean couscous with roasted vegetables and tzatziki, followed by roast veal loin with herbs, mushroom sauce and potatoes. There’s a vegetarian option and an open bar serving ice-cold cava, white and rosé wine, beer, soft drinks and water throughout the crossing. The crew have already set the table.

A gulet or a catamaran? There’s no right answer, and you can’t go wrong either way

If you’re not sure, think about what sort of day you fancy. The catamaran is more modern, very stable and is perfect for anyone looking for maximum comfort. The gulet has soul: wood, sails and that touch of romance you get from a classic boat.

Both cruises follow the same beautiful coastline, and on both we keep a lookout for dolphins or whales, which are around here all year round, although we can never guarantee we’ll spot them. It’s a question of character, not class.

If you fancy swapping your usual plans for an evening by candlelight on a wooden boat, this is the boat for you. We set sail from the jetty at Morro Jable, in Fuerteventura, and we’ll take care of everything else.

You’ve more or less planned your day – you want to head out to sea – and suddenly you’re faced with a dilemma: do you spend a couple of hours on it, or do you take the whole morning? It’s not just a question of time. Depending on what you choose, you’ll experience the day in one way or another.

Discover All Our Excursions

If you’re short on time, two hours will be enough

There are days when you’re already pressed for time, yet you still fancy heading out to spot dolphins. That’s what the Magic Dolphin is for: a quick two-hour trip, with drinks on board, that takes you straight to what you’ve come to see.

It works really well if it’s your first time on a boat and you’re not sure how it’ll go, if you’ve got things to do in the afternoon, or if you’re travelling with someone who prefers a short taster session. You’ll be back on dry land with almost the whole morning still ahead of you.

If you’re in charge of the day, four hours go a long way

When you don’t have to keep an eye on the clock, the sea takes on a different character. On our catamarans’ four-hour trips, there’s time to sail at a leisurely pace, look out for cetaceans at your own pace, drop anchor off the coast of Jandía, take a dip in the sea and sit down to a meal on board with an all-you-can-drink bar.

It’s the full half-day package – the one that leaves you feeling as though you’ve really switched off. If you’re coming with your family or a group, the Magic Select is the most convenient way to get around; if you’re looking for something a bit more exclusive, there are the premium catamarans.

What really changes from one to the other

In two hours, everything revolves around spotting them: heading out, looking for them and enjoying the moment if they turn up. The other four hours are for everything else, which is quite a lot: anchoring, a swim in the Atlantic, lunch and lazing about on deck with nothing to do.

There’s another detail you only notice when you’re out sailing every day: the longer you’re out on the water, the better our chances are of spotting dolphins. It’s no guarantee, because they’re wild and turn up whenever they like, but time is always on our side.

So, which one suits you best?

If you’ve got a busy schedule or want to enjoy the sea without taking up the whole day, go for the two-hour trip. If you’ve got the day off, fancy a swim and a meal on board, and want the day to last a while, go for the four-hour trip.

Neither is better than the other. They are two different ways of experiencing the same sea at Jandía.

See you at the quay in Morro Jable

Whatever pace you choose, we set sail from the quay at Morro Jable, in Fuerteventura, and we’ll take care of everything else. Have a look at our boats and choose the one that best suits your day.

Whether you’re coming with the children or with a group of twelve or fifteen, before you book a boat you always find yourself wondering the same thing: will they get seasick? Will there be room for everyone? With the Magic Select, that question answers itself the moment you see a photo or step on board and realise just how big and stable it is.

See Magic Select catamaran excursion

A large catamaran where it’s hard to get seasick

The Select is a super catamaran measuring 22.8 metres in length and 10.5 metres in beam. In other words: a wide, sturdy and very stable boat that barely rocks, even in a bit of a swell. That’s exactly what puts most families’ minds at ease.
Children can move about on deck without you having to worry, and if you’re prone to seasickness, you’ll appreciate it from the very first minute.

Plenty of space, even if you come as a group

It can carry up to a hundred people, but it’s hardly ever completely full, so even with a large group you won’t feel cramped. There’s plenty of space to stretch out, sunbathe, chat and let everyone do their own thing. It’s a half-day outing, at a leisurely pace, suitable for all ages, from the little ones to the grandparents.

Food for everyone and a swim in the Atlantic

When the boat drops anchor, the crew serve the house special: Mozarabic chicken with rice and vegetables, with a vegetarian option for those who don’t eat meat. All this comes with an all-you-can-drink selection of water, soft drinks, beer and wine, with no limit on the number of rounds.
And before or after lunch, there’s a stop for a swim in crystal-clear waters. Along the way, we head out in search of wild dolphins and whales, which turn up when they please and are never guaranteed, but make their home in the south of the island.

Easy to organise

The trip lasts four hours, departing from the port of Morro Jable on Fuerteventura, with a pick-up service available in Costa Calma, Esquinzo, Morro Jable and Jandía. No amount of organisation is too much when it comes to comfort, enjoyment and making the most of the day – which is exactly what you appreciate when travelling with the whole family or a group.

We look forward to welcoming you and making your visit to Fuerteventura an unforgettable experience

If you’re looking for a comfortable trip with plenty of space, food for everyone and no risk of seasickness, the Select is the boat for you. Take a look at the Magic Select excursion and book your place now.

You’ve decided you want a luxury catamaran day trip departing from Morro Jable, in Fuerteventura, and you’re torn between two options: the Magic Dreams and the Magic Deluxe. That’s a good sign, because there’s no wrong choice here. Both are premium, small-group trips and include the same all-you-can-drink cava. The difference lies in the sort of day you’re looking for.

How are they similar?

Before you make up your mind, don’t put too much pressure on yourself: they both have a lot in common. A four-hour cruise, setting off from Morro Jable harbour, a small group to avoid crowds, a swim in the Atlantic, an open bar serving ice-cold cava and a meal cooked by a top chef from Jandía. On both trips, we head out in search of dolphins and whales in the wild – sightings are never guaranteed, but they make their home in the south of the island. Whichever one you choose, you can’t go wrong.

Magic Dreams: more fun in the water

The Dreams is the newest catamaran in the fleet, a recently designed Lagoon 43. Your day on board will be more action-packed: whilst at anchor, as well as swimming, we’ll have snorkelling gear and paddleboards on board, so you can explore the volcanic seabed or paddle for a while alongside the boat.

The meal is served in courses that will treat your palate to a truly luxurious culinary experience in every sense. The starter features semi-matured cheeses from Fuerteventura (with paprika, in olive oil and smoked), followed by a delicious cherry tomato salad with mozzarella pearls and basil oil. For the main course, we serve an exquisite, tender roast beef fillet with potatoes confit in aromatic oil and a sherry gravy. If you’d like to enjoy a unique sailing experience and savour a delicious and varied lunch or dinner, this is the perfect plan for you.

Magic Deluxe: even more of a private yacht experience

The Deluxe is a Lagoon 450S with its own cabins and bathrooms. That’s the magic of it: stepping aboard a boat that feels like your own, where time slows down. The cabins – provided you let the crew know – are perfect for getting changed, leaving your things or resting for a moment in the shade.

And the meal is a full main course, with a hot main dish: Mediterranean couscous and roast beef fillet with mushroom sauce and potatoes. If you’re looking for a more leisurely, cosy experience on board, the Deluxe is the one for you.

So, which one will you choose?

It’s not a question of which is better, but of what you fancy on the day. If you want to get out on the water with a snorkel and a paddleboard and try out the brand-new catamaran, go for the Dreams. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, a full menu and a boat with cabins, the Deluxe is the one for you.

And if you’re still unsure, drop us a line: we know both of them inside out and can help you choose based on your group and the day. If you’re also tempted by an even larger catamaran that isn’t quite so small, the Magic Select will be the one for you. Have a look at the comparison of the three catamarans.

They both set off from Morro Jable (Fuerteventura)

Whichever one you choose, you’ll set sail from the Morro Jable quay with the crew taking care of everything. Take a look at the Magic Dreams excursion or the Magic Deluxe excursion and go for the one that’s won you over.

You’ve hoisted the sails from Morro Jable Quay in Fuerteventura, and you’ve been sailing for a while with the breeze on your face, keeping an eye out for dolphins that pop up whenever they please. Then the catamaran comes to a halt in turquoise waters, the anchor drops, and the moment you’ll never forget arrives: a stop to quietly enjoy our fantastic waters.

I WANT TO GO ON A CRUISE ON THE MAGIC DREAMS

The turquoise waters where we dropped anchor

Halfway through the crossing, we dropped anchor in one of the idyllic bays along the south coast, facing picture-perfect beaches and the cliffs of Jandía Natural Park. The engine fell silent and all we could hear was the water lapping against the hull.

The Lagoon 43 is spacious and stable, with bow nets where you can lie back just a few inches from the sea. But let’s be honest: nobody can stay up there for very long. The water’s too tempting.

Three plans on the water, at your own pace

You can dive headfirst into the Atlantic and float there whilst the sun dries your face. You can put on the snorkelling goggles we have on board and peer down at a volcanic rock seabed teeming with life. Or hop onto a stand-up paddleboard and paddle slowly out a little way to look at the catamaran from the water.

There’s no rush and no obligation. You can do all three, stick to just one, or lie back on deck with a nice cold drink and watch the others take the plunge. And when you get out of the water, the table’s already laid: a gourmet meal served whilst we’re at anchor, right in the middle of the sea.

Who is this excursion for?

For those who aren’t content just to look at the sea from the shore: families, couples and small groups keen to experience it for themselves. We sail on a Lagoon 43 catamaran, setting off from Morro Jable Quay (Fuerteventura), and the trip is suitable for those aged 12 and over.

And if you’re not sure which of our boats to choose, we’ll help you pick the right one for you.

Now all that’s missing is you

After a swim, the best is yet to come: sailing along the cliffs of Jandía Natural Park – the ones you can only really see from the sea. But if you’re left with just one image from the day, it’ll be that of the plunge into the turquoise water.

Check availability or message us on WhatsApp. We’ll provide the catamaran, the mooring and the boards. All you have to do is take the plunge.

The catamaran drops anchor in a bay so we can enjoy a swim in the beautiful waters of Fuerteventura; the engine is switched off and, after our first dip in the Atlantic, the other highlight of the day begins: lunch on deck with a nice cold drink in hand.

Eating out on the open sea, with the Jandía coastline stretching out before you, is a whole different experience. And don’t expect the usual snack-style fare you’d get on a day trip: on board, the food is cooked and prepared with the same care and attention as you’d find at a fine restaurant on land.

DISCOVER THE EXPERIENCE OF SAILING WITH US IN FUERTEVENTURA

Eating well is part of the experience on our trips

We prepare it using produce from the island and the skilled hands of a talented chef from Jandía, and it’s served after a swim, when you’re feeling peckish after a day at sea. Each boat has its own menu, designed specifically for that day’s trip. We’ll tell you what’s in store on each one.

What to eat, depending on your boat

Magic Dreams

Here, the meal is served in courses. It begins with a refreshing gazpacho made with avocado, cucumber and apple, served with pickled onion, followed by a platter of cheeses from Fuerteventura and a salad of mozzarella and cherry tomatoes with pesto, before the main course arrives: tender roast beef with tzatziki sauce and potatoes. A multi-course meal, right in the middle of the sea.

Magic Deluxe

The menu starts with a Mediterranean couscous with roasted vegetables and fresh tzatziki, followed by roast veal loin with aromatic herbs, mushroom sauce and confit potatoes. Just the sort of main course you fancy after a good spell of sailing and swimming.

Magic Select

The star of the show is the Mozarabic chicken with rice and vegetables, cooked on board. It is the ship’s signature dish, the one that families and groups who return season after season keep coming back for.

And if you don’t eat meat, don’t worry: on all our boats we serve a Mozarabic vegetarian burger with Zahara-style flavoured rice. Here, nobody’s eyeing up the dish next to them.

The schooner Aphrodite: by day and at sunset

The schooner Aphrodite on its day trip, and so the menu features the heartiest meal of all the catamarans: Mediterranean couscous with roasted vegetables and tzatziki, followed by roast beef fillet with herbs, mushroom sauce and potatoes. All washed down with an open bar of ice-cold cava, white and rosé wine, beer, soft drinks and water.

And as the sun sets, the Aphrodite Sunset tour shifts focus to fusion cuisine: vegetable maki with wakame seaweed and sichimi mayonnaise, creamy hummus with smoked paprika oil and pickles, and butter chicken served on naan bread with Greek yoghurt sauce.

A glass of ice-cold cava and the DJ’s music on board as the sun sets over Jandía.

Drinks: all-you-can-drink throughout the voyage

Drinks aren’t counted or rationed: it’s an all-you-can-drink buffet for four hours. White and rosé wine, beer, soft drinks and water are always served chilled, and on several of our boats, we also have ice-cold cava for toasting when you jump into the water or when a dolphin appears. You ask, we serve.

Book your place at the table by joining us

One important thing before you come: if you have any food allergies, please let us know at least 48 hours in advance and we’ll adapt the menu accordingly. We want you to eat in peace and enjoy yourself without having to worry about anything else.

Once you’ve made up your mind, check availability or drop us a line. We set sail from the pier at Morro Jable, in Fuerteventura, with the table set and the sea waiting for us.

You’ve got a day off in Fuerteventura, you’ve already decided you want to go sailing, and there’s just one thing left to decide: should you book the morning trip or save it for the afternoon?

It’s the same Jandía coastline and the same Atlantic Ocean at any time of day, but the sea at nine o’clock is nothing like it is at five. And as we go out almost every day, we’ll tell you what really changes so that you can make an informed choice, rather than a blind one.

What really changes between the morning and the afternoon

The island, the boat and what you take on board remain the same. What changes are the sea, the light and the temperature.

The wind and sea conditions

Early in the morning, the sea off Jandía is usually calm, almost as smooth as oil. The trade winds, the prevailing winds in Fuerteventura, have not yet picked up.

As the sun rises, that wind picks up and gains momentum as we round the Jandía peninsula, so in the afternoon it’s normal to encounter a bit more of a breeze and some swell. It’s nothing to worry about: the boat sails with more vigour and the cool air is a welcome relief. But if it’s your first time on board or you know you get seasick easily, you’ll find the calm sea in the morning works in your favour.

Light, heat and water in the bathroom

In the morning, the light streams in clearly and the water takes on that catalogue-perfect turquoise hue. It’s the best time to take photos in the pool and to see the seabed when you peer down through your snorkelling goggles.

In the afternoon, it all gets warmer. The sun slowly sets over the volcanic mountains of Jandía, bathing them in golden light. In summer, though, the midday heat can be intense: on board, you’re always in the shade and the Atlantic is just a stone’s throw away for a quick dip, but some people prefer to get up early to avoid the worst of the sun.

Are dolphins and whales more commonly seen at any particular time of day?

It’s the million-dollar question, and the honest answer is no. Dolphins and whales are free and don’t keep to a timetable: there’s no specific time slot that guarantees you’ll see them.

What we do know from experience is that, when the sea is calm in the morning, a fin or a blow can be spotted from a distance sooner, and it’s easier to locate them. In the afternoon, when there’s a bit more swell, you have to keep a closer eye out, although sightings can happen at any time. That uncertainty is part and parcel of the experience: that’s why, when they do appear, the moment stays with you.

Morning or afternoon? Choose your plan – there’s no ‘right’ choice when it comes to enjoying your unforgettable experience with us

There isn’t a better shift – there’s a better shift for you.

If you’re travelling with children, are worried about the motion, or want the sea to be as calm as possible and the light to be as bright as possible for your photos, the morning is the best time for you.

If you’d rather not get up early, set off once the morning is well underway, sail with a gentle breeze and enjoy the warm light of the late afternoon, then the afternoon is the time for you.

Both trips feature the same boat, the same coastline and the same food and drink on board, and you can book either one without any further ado. So it’s not a question of getting it right, it’s a question of choosing the option that appeals to you most. And if you’re still unsure, do drop us a line before you book: we know what the sea’s like each day and we’ll tell you honestly which trip we’d choose ourselves.

We look forward to seeing you in Morro Jable, at a time of your choosing

Whether it’s in the morning or the afternoon, one thing never changes: the feeling you get when we cast off – the engine slowing down, the water shifting from blue to turquoise, and the south of Fuerteventura opening up just for you. Once you’ve decided on a time, check availability below or give us a call. We set off from the jetty at Morro Jable, in Fuerteventura, and we’ll take care of everything else to make your visit an unforgettable experience on any of our excursions.

There’s one question we’re asked almost every day: Can you actually see dolphins, or is it more a matter of luck?

The answer is quick and simple: in the south of Fuerteventura, cetaceans aren’t just a seasonal sight. They’re our neighbours. Tropical pilot whales, dolphins, pilot whales, fin whales… We spot them more often than people expect, and we’ve known this for years because we’re here every day.

The Magic Dolphin is the tour that was created from that knowledge, so that you can take home an unforgettable experience and memory.

BOOK A WHALE-WATCHING TOUR IN FUERTEVENTURA

A 2-hour trip out on the open water

The Magic Dolphin is a high-speed boat measuring 11.72 metres in length. It sets sail from the port of Morro Jable, in Fuerteventura, and spends the entire two hours doing just one thing: sailing out to where the cetaceans are, giving them as much time as they need, and returning.

There’s no multi-course meal or long afternoon on the beach. This excursion takes us straight to discover the fascinating wildlife of Fuerteventura.

For those arriving with a free morning or afternoon, with a gap between island excursions, or with young children who can’t yet cope with a four-hour crossing, the Dolphin is the perfect choice.

The sighting protocol we follow on board the boat

Every trip has specialist cetacean staff on board, not just a general guide. And we follow the Canary Islands Government’s Responsible Whale Watching Protocol: we reduce speed as we approach, sail parallel to the animals, avoid cutting across their path, and do not race between boats.

The guide explains all this before we reach the whale-watching area. We do this because we believe that understanding what you’re seeing makes the experience even better, and because the cetaceans appreciate it.

What happens when you come across them?

No one can guarantee a sighting. They are wild animals in their natural habitat, and that is exactly what makes them so breathtaking when they do appear.

But this much we do know: the waters off the coast of Jandía are one of the few areas in Europe where tropical pilot whales are permanent residents. They’re there. And when you’ve been setting out from the same harbour to look for them for years, you learn to read the sea.

When they appear, the boat adjusts its engine and the silence becomes noticeable. Sometimes they swim alongside the hull for minutes on end. Other times they leap out of the water. Sometimes they simply breathe at the surface and dive back down again. Every trip is different, and that’s part of what people take away with them.

Sea conditions permitting, there is also a stop for a swim in the Atlantic before returning to port.

Who is the Magic Dolphin for?

For those who want whale-watching to be the main attraction, with no frills or fluff.

It’s particularly well suited if you’re travelling with young children, aged 2 and over. It’s ideal if you’re short on time and want to make the most of it. And it’s perfect if you already have other plans on the island that day and are looking to add a morning or an afternoon by the sea that’s truly worthwhile.

It is also the ideal choice for anyone who has come to Fuerteventura specifically to see dolphins or whales, wants to do so responsibly, and prefers a trip focused on that above all else.

What’s included

Hotel pick-up is included. Drinks are available on board during the trip. A specialist guide accompanies every trip without exception. You don’t need to bring anything special for the wildlife-spotting trip. The crew on board will take care of everything.

Two hours in the Atlantic off Jandía. The crew who set out from here every day. And the cetaceans off the south coast of Fuerteventura, who have been in these waters far longer than we have.

If you’ve made it this far, you probably already know that you want to see the coast of Jandía from the sea, but you’ve been struck by the classic dilemma at the Morro Jable pier: which boat is best for me today?

At Magic & Sailing, we take the same care with every trip, but the experience varies depending on the boat you choose. No one option is better than another; it’s simply a matter of finding the one that best suits your mood. We’ll help you decide so that when you step onto the deck, you feel like you’re exactly where you want to be.

Magic Select: breadth, networks and Majorero rhythm

The Magic Select is the ‘giant’ of our fleet. At 23 metres in length, it is the largest sailing catamaran on the island. If you’re worried about seasickness or are travelling with children who need space to run about, this is the boat for you. Its stability is unbeatable and the atmosphere is purely social.

Sailing in its purest form: When the Jandía wind picks up and conditions are safe, we unfurl the large sail. The silence is complete and the feeling of power from the Atlantic is indescribable.

Shared atmosphere: It is the ideal place to make friends or celebrate with a large family, enjoying the sun on its enormous bow nets.

A taste of tradition: Here we serve our famous Mozarabic chicken with rice and vegetables. A dish steeped in history that has become the hallmark of this journey.

Magic Deluxe: the refuge of the twelve chosen ones

If you’re looking for something more leisurely, the Magic Deluxe is a different concept. We sailed on a Lagoon 450S, a piece of modern nautical engineering limited to just 12 people. Here, time seems to stand still; it’s the closest thing to having your own private yacht.

Real privacy: Forget the queues. You have the entire catamaran to yourself and a tiny group, with a crew that anticipates your needs before you even ask.

Haute cuisine at sea: Lunch here is on another level. We’re talking about a gourmet menu prepared by a chef from Jandía: Mediterranean couscous and beef tenderloin with mushroom sauce and confit potatoes.

VIP comfort: Premium finishes, wine tasting and that chilled cava that tastes better in the middle of the ocean.

Regarding water activities: the Deluxe package includes a swim in the bay. Snorkelling equipment is not provided on board, so if you want to go snorkelling, please bring your own or buy some at the harbour before setting off.

Magic Dreams: where luxury meets cutting-edge design

Magic Dreams is our latest venture into exclusivity. Aboard our two new Lagoon 43s, this experience is designed for those who want to go one step further in design and gastronomy.

State-of-the-art design: The Lagoon 43 breaks down the barriers between the interior and the exterior. It is a boat that ‘flows’, designed to make you feel connected to the sea in every corner.

Signature gourmet tapas: Instead of a sit-down meal, here we enjoy a tasting menu of gourmet tapas created by the chef of the prestigious Salvaje restaurant. Every bite is pure flavour and sophistication.

Action and relaxation: As well as dolphin watching, we offer activities such as stand-up paddleboarding and snorkelling, with all the necessary equipment on board, for those who want to experience the waters off Jandía in an active way.

Minimum age on board the Magic Dreams: 12 years. If you’re travelling with younger children, the Magic Select is the best option in the fleet for families.

Who are you going with, and what do you want to experience?

The chart helps, but the real question is: what sort of day are you looking for? These are the situations we see most often at the quay.

Family with young children (under 12 years old)

The Magic Select is the obvious choice. It has more space, greater stability in rough seas and there are no age restrictions. The nets at the bow are the children’s favourite spot.

Couple looking for something different

It depends on what you mean by ‘different’. If you’re looking for maximum privacy, a chef’s menu and a peaceful atmosphere, go for the Deluxe. If you prefer water sports, modern design and signature tapas, go for the Dreams. Both are for groups of 12, so the experience is equally exclusive.

Group of friends or hen/stag party

The Select handles large groups well and the atmosphere develops naturally. For groups looking for complete privacy (just you on board), the Deluxe or the Dreams in private mode is the best option. Please check with us for availability.

For those who want it all: water sports, fine dining and design

The Magic Dreams. It’s the busiest boat in the fleet: snorkelling with equipment provided, stand-up paddleboarding, gourmet tapas and the most modern Lagoon 43s in the harbour. Just remember that the minimum age is 12.

A sea for every gaze

The three boats leave Morro Jable every morning with the same enthusiasm: to enjoy sailing and the scenery while we have the chance to see the dolphins and whales that inhabit the area. Ultimately, the choice depends on how you want to remember this day.

If you’re looking for energy, space and traditional flavours, the <g id="gid_0">Select</g> awaits you. If you prefer the total peace of an intimate group with a chef’s menu, the <g id="gid_1">Deluxe</g> is for you. And if you want to try out the latest in sailing, enjoy signature tapas and jump on a paddle surfboard, the <g id="gid_2">Dreams</g> is the place where your dreams of the sea come true.

Whatever your choice, our crew will be at the dock to welcome you aboard and ensure you have an experience you will remember for a lifetime.

Have you chosen your favourite yet? Places on the Deluxe and Dreams are extremely limited, so make sure you don’t miss out.

Frequently asked questions

How does Magic Dreams differ from Magic Deluxe?

Both are luxury catamarans for up to 12 people. The main difference is that the Dreams includes snorkelling and stand-up paddleboarding on board and serves gourmet tapas; the Deluxe sails on a Lagoon 450S with more interior space and serves a full main course prepared by a chef. On the Dreams, the experience is more active; on the Deluxe, it is more leisurely.

What is the largest ship?

The Magic Select, which is 23 metres long, is also the only one that regularly sails when the wind in Jandía allows it.

Can I take children to Magic Dreams?

The minimum age on the Magic Dreams is 12. For younger children, the Magic Select is the best option in the fleet.

Can the boat be booked for private hire?

Yes. Both the Deluxe and the Dreams (and the Select for large groups) can be booked on a private basis. Please contact us to check availability and terms and conditions.

Fuerteventura is one of the best destinations in the Atlantic for spotting whales and dolphins in the wild. Its deep waters, minimal industrial activity and geographical location make it a true marine sanctuary. If you’re dreaming of a magical, nature-filled experience during your holiday, this article is the perfect place to start.

Is it possible to see whales in Fuerteventura?

Yes, and it’s one of the most thrilling experiences you can have on the island. Its waters are home to more than 29 species of cetaceans, including tropical pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, beaked whales, fin whales and, occasionally, sperm whales.

According to the Canary Islands Government, the archipelago is home to one of the most significant migration routes and permanent populations of cetaceans in Europe. This biodiversity has led to the designation of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) in several areas, including Fuerteventura.

Where to see whales in Fuerteventura?

The best place for whale watching is the south of the island, specifically on the boat trips that depart from Morro Jable. This area is notable for:

Having deep ocean floors very close to the coast, being free from industrial shipping traffic, and having warm waters rich in biodiversity.

Excursions such as the Magic Dolphin set sail from here – the perfect choice if you’re looking for comfort, flexibility and professionalism on board.

Recommended excursion: Magic Dolphin

Type of vessel: a high-speed craft with a length of 11.72 m and a beam of 4.48 m.

Duration: 2 hours.

Guided by: staff specialising in whale watching.

Services included: hotel pick-up, drinks on board, and a stop for a swim, weather permitting.

During the trip, the on-board guide will provide information about any marine life spotted. Responsible sighting protocols will be followed, and animal welfare will always be prioritised, avoiding any disturbance or pursuit.

BOOK A WHALE-WATCHING TOUR IN FUERTEVENTURA

When is the best time to see whales?

Although Fuerteventura offers sightings all year round, these are the most favourable times depending on the species:

Season

Most common species

October – March

Tropical pilot whales, fin whales

April – June

Bottlenose dolphins, beaked whales

July – September

Sperm whales, pilot whales, dolphin calves

They can be seen on any excursion during the day, although in the mornings the sea is usually calmer and visibility is better.

What about the dolphins? What we see from the boat every day

You have to go looking for whales. Dolphins, on the other hand, often come of their own accord.

In the south of Fuerteventura, bottlenose dolphins are the ones we spot most often on our daily trips from Morro Jable. They are curious creatures: when they sense the boat moving, it’s not unusual for them to swim up to the bow and start swimming alongside the hull for several minutes. It’s one of those moments that people don’t expect and that stays with them.

Unlike pilot whales, which are permanent residents of the southern channel of Fuerteventura and are almost always present, bottlenose dolphins are seen more frequently during the warmer months, although they can be spotted all year round. In summer, it is also common to come across groups of striped dolphins, which are faster and more numerous, and travel in large pods.

What is the difference between whale-watching and dolphin-watching?

The experience is quite different. With whales (mainly pilot whales and sei whales), the protocol requires you to slow down and keep your distance: they are slower, larger, and you have to approach them with care. With dolphins, it’s often the other way round: they are the ones that approach the boat.

The Magic Dolphin tour is designed to spot marine mammals in general: whales, dolphins – whatever the sea has to offer that day. It’s not just a whale-watching tour. If there are dolphins along the route, we’ll spot them.

If you’d like to find out more about the species of dolphins that inhabit these waters and how to tell them apart, you can read our article on dolphins in Fuerteventura.

Responsible tourism: why it matters

At Magic & Sailing, we adhere to the standards set out in the Protocol for Responsible Cetacean Sightings in the Canary Islands, which include:

Keep a safe distance from animals, slow down as you approach them, do not feed them or make noises that might startle them, and do not cut across their path or circle around them.

This form of tourism not only allows you to enjoy the experience with respect, but also helps to preserve the marine ecosystem for future generations.

Practical tips for your trip

Bring a camera or a mobile phone with a zoom function to take better photos.

Use eco-friendly sun cream and sunglasses.

Keep an eye on the guide: their expertise is key to seeing more and understanding better.

Book your encounter with the whales of Fuerteventura

Sailing in deep waters and spotting wild cetaceans is a life-changing experience. If you’re visiting Fuerteventura and want to enjoy something truly special, choose an ethical, professional tour designed to create unforgettable memories.

Book your Magic Dolphin excursion now and enjoy an unforgettable experience in the south of the island.

Frequently asked questions

What are the chances of seeing whales?

The chances are high, but as they are wild animals, we cannot guarantee it. It is, however, common to see dolphins, pilot whales and other species.

Is it suitable for children or the elderly?

Yes, although this excursion is specifically designed for adults and families seeking peace and quiet and wishing to respect the wildlife. The crew are trained to cater safely for all types of guests.

Is swimming allowed during the trip?

I don’t know anything about dolphins, but weather permitting, we’ll stop for a swim in the wonderful waters in safe areas not far from the coast. It’s a lovely way to cool off surrounded by nature.

When is the best time to spot dolphins in Fuerteventura?

Bottlenose dolphins can be found in the south of Fuerteventura all year round. Morning trips, when the sea is calmer, offer the best conditions for spotting them. During the summer months, it is also common to encounter pods of striped dolphins in safe areas not far from the coast. A great way to cool off in the heart of nature.

We get this question almost every day via message: ‘What should I bring on the trip?’

At the Morro Jable pier, we’ve been saying the same thing for years: far less than you think. We see people coming up with bags full of food, parasols, folding chairs… and going back down with everything exactly as they brought it. That’s why we wanted to write this: so you arrive at the pier with what really matters and leave the rest at the hotel.

What you do need to pack in your rucksack

It’s not a long list. Basically, a swimsuit, a towel and sun cream – which, oddly enough, is what most people forget because they take it for granted and get complacent.

You really do need to be more careful than usual about sun protection: the Atlantic sun on deck is more intense than it looks, and the four hours out at sea fly by before you know it. If you’re travelling with children or have sensitive skin, make sure you pack a long-sleeved top or T-shirt for the middle of the day.

A microfibre towel is handy because it dries quickly and takes up little space, but any towel will do.

Make sure your mobile is protected

A waterproof bag or cheap waterproof cover from any shop in the harbour. There’ll be splashes, there’ll be times in the water, and you’ll want to take photos. A two-euro cover saves you a two-hundred-euro shock.

Be sure to download your booking voucher before you leave, in case you don’t have mobile coverage near the pier.

Something with a zip for the return journey

Make sure you pack a light windbreaker, even if it’s warm when you set off. On the way out, sailing with the sun on your face is pure pleasure. On the way back, as the boat heads for port, the Jandía breeze feels quite different. All you need is something that fits folded away in a pocket.

As for footwear, opt for sandals with a heel strap or water trainers. Flip-flops don’t work well on deck.

Another question we’re often asked is: should I bring my snorkel?

It depends on the boat you’ve booked, and it’s worth finding out before you set off.

If you’re coming on the Magic Dreams: you don’t need to bring anything. The Dreams provides a full set of snorkelling gear on board, plus paddleboards for the stop at the anchorage and for swimming. When the captain gives the go-ahead, all you have to do is jump in the water.

If you’re travelling on the Magic Deluxe: a swim in the bay is included, but snorkelling equipment isn’t provided on board. If you’d like to explore underwater, please bring your own or pick some up at the port before boarding.

If you’re unsure about what’s included in your specific trip, please check your voucher or get in touch with us beforehand. That way, the day will run more smoothly for everyone.

What about a rucksack with a snack or a meal?

There’s no need to bring any food or drink. All outings include a fully stocked open bar (prosecco, wine, beer, soft drinks) and a meal prepared by the chef from Jandía. You can leave your shopping bag in the car without opening it.

One last thing: if you’ve got a pair of compact binoculars at home, pop them in your bag. When pilot whales or bottlenose dolphins appear near the boat, seeing them up close really makes the experience special. They’re light as a feather.

And if you’re worried about seasickness, do ask your pharmacist for advice before you set off. The waters off the south coast of Fuerteventura are usually calm, but everyone reacts differently, and it’s not really our place to give that advice.

Swimsuit, towel, sun cream, sturdy shoes and a protected mobile phone. We’ll provide the rest.

A key final mini-checklist for you to make a note of

Sunscreen, sunglasses, cap with fastening.

Swimsuit, lightweight towel, T-shirt/UV lycra.

Windproof clothing (just in case) and sturdy footwear.

Water and snacks, if applicable.

Mobile phone + waterproof bag + strap.

Binoculars/camera (optional).

Please bring your own goggles and snorkel if you’re joining any excursion other than Magic Dreams.

Prevention of motion sickness (only if you think you need it and your doctor recommends it).

Identification + booking details.

Frequently asked questions from users

Can I bring my own food and drink?
Yes, if you’d like to bring something extra along, that’s no problem at all.

Is there always a toilet break?
Yes, but it can be affected if sea conditions are not suitable. Safety comes first.

Can I use my snorkel?
Yes, provided the skipper gives permission and it is outside wildlife areas and the boat is stationary.

Is there a guarantee of seeing dolphins or whales?
No. They are wild animals. Even so, the routes and the team’s expertise maximise the chances of a sighting.

Canary Islands Day is fast approaching, and in the port of Morro Jable you can feel that sense of pride so unique to us, born of living by the sea. For our team, this day is a tribute to the seafaring heritage that defines us. We have been sharing the secrets of this coastline with our visitors since 1995, and we can’t think of a more beautiful way to celebrate our homeland than by sailing under the Jandía sun.

On 30 May, we’d like to invite you to raise a glass with us on board. Imagine celebrating our heritage as you feel the sea spray on your face, letting the breeze carry you away on any of our excursions, or taking a dip at the incredible turquoise-water beaches where we anchor to enjoy the best of our local cuisine.

If you’re joining us on this special day, here’s a tip from our crew: the wind on board can be deceptive and mask the sun’s strength. Before you board, apply plenty of sun cream, bring sunglasses and a hat, and don’t forget your feet. On a boat deck, your feet are just as exposed as the rest of your body and are often the first thing people forget about.

If you’re lucky enough to be sailing with us during these spring weeks, keep your eyes on the horizon. This is the season when the giants pass by. Fin whales, up to 20 metres long, use our coastline as a migration corridor on their way to the cold waters of the north.

Thanks to the mixing of the waters off Jandía at this time of year, which brings nutrients up from the seabed, these impressive baleen whales find a place here to recharge their batteries. Watching a fin whale blow from the deck of a boat is one of those experiences that makes you feel small and, at the same time, immensely fortunate. Our crew is always on the lookout: in May, the Atlantic always has a surprise in store.

At the Morro Jable quay, you’ll see boats of all sizes. At Magic & Sailing, we made a decision some time ago: for experiences such as the Magic Deluxe or the Dreams, the number of places is set in stone. Why? Firstly, for your sake. We want you to have your own little corner, where you can hear the wind in the sails rather than the noise of a crowd.

And secondly, for the sake of our cetacean friends. A smaller group has less of an impact and allows us to approach them in a much calmer and more ethical way, strictly adhering to our Blue Boat commitment. The magic of the sea cannot be enjoyed in a hurry or amidst the jostling. The true luxury in 2026 is the space and silence that allow you to hear a dolphin breathing right next to the hull.

Why do we see pilot whales and beaked whales so close to the coast?

Sometimes, whilst out on one of our boat trips, we come across animals that seem to prefer calm waters to acrobatics: pilot whales and the mysterious beaked whales. The reason we are able to see these ‘elite divers’ so close to Morro Jable is that the seabed beneath us is fascinating.

Just a few kilometres off the coast, the continental shelf drops away into underwater canyons that plunge vertically into the abyss. These deep valleys are home to squid and other cephalopods, the favourite food of these giants. At Magic & Sailing, we don’t just take you to see them; we explain that you’re sailing over one of the Atlantic’s most significant submerged mountain ranges. It’s not luck – it’s because we know the treasure map of Jandía.

The May bank holiday is approaching, and the sea around Fuerteventura is at its most vibrant. If you’re planning a getaway for the holiday, there’s a fascinating scientific reason to choose a boat trip: the ocean is ‘waking up’.

Between February and April, the layer of water separating the cold depths from the warm surface (the thermocline) becomes thinner. This allows nutrients from the seabed to rise to the surface, creating a burst of microscopic life that attracts all kinds of animals.

This is the time of year when we usually spot large fin whales passing through and dolphins more active than ever. What’s more, the water temperature is perfect, always inviting a peaceful and enjoyable dip at our anchorage stops. The May Bank Holiday isn’t just a break in the calendar; it’s an opportunity to witness first-hand the greatest natural spectacle of the Canarian spring.

A short story about human reliability and expertise versus marine technology.

Often, when a pod of bottlenose dolphins suddenly appears alongside the hull, passengers ask us in amazement whether we use radar or sonar to locate them. The answer is a resounding ‘no’. As a certified Blue Boat, we avoid any technology that might emit noise or vibrations that could disturb the animals in their own habitat.

Our secret is far older and more human: it is instinct and craftsmanship. The deck crew doesn’t just watch the horizon; they interpret the signs the ocean gives us. A subtle change in the colour of the water, the frantic flight of shearwaters or a particular current tell us where there is life.

We have been exploring the coast of Jandía since 1995, and it is this hard-won knowledge that enables us to encounter our fellow travellers in a natural and respectful way, with an exceptionally high success rate. Here, the magic comes from the Atlantic, but it’s our crew who have the keen eye to spot it.

Although you may never have wondered about it, we’re going to tell you why sailing in the south of Fuerteventura is so comfortable and safe.

There’s a ‘trick’ to sailing around the south of Fuerteventura that not everyone knows about. Sometimes, whilst the wind is blowing strongly and the sea is choppy in the north of the island, here at the Morro Jable quay the water is as smooth as glass. It’s neither coincidence nor luck; it’s pure geology and what we sailors around Jandía call the ‘island effect’.

The Jandía Peninsula acts as a colossal shield. Its peaks, with Pico de la Zarza reaching a height of 807 metres, act as a physical barrier that slows down the prevailing north-easterly trade winds This ancient massif, which 15 million years ago was a separate island, creates a ‘shadow’ zone on the leeward coast.

For us, this terrain is our greatest asset: it ensures a smooth ride, ideal for those prone to seasickness, and makes our bays the perfect haven where mother dolphins come to rest with their calves. Sailing here means choosing the most sheltered spot on the Atlantic, where the mountains embrace the sea, so that your only concern is enjoying the breeze.

Fancy joining us on a boat trip? Experience the south of Fuerteventura from the sea with our boat trips.

*Source of the featured image: Pájara Town Council and Magic and Sailing.

Conexión con la identidad local y la IV Feria del Bonito en nuestra localidad (11-12 de abril de 2026).

The festive atmosphere still hangs in the air at Plaza de los Pescadores. This weekend we’re celebrating the 4th Morro Jable Bonito and Tuna Fair, and for the Magic & Sailing team, this event is much more than just a culinary occasion; it’s a reminder of who we are and where we come from. We were delighted to be in a marquee, collaborating and taking part with the event organiser, the Bocaina training centre. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Back at the quay, we understand that on-board cuisine cannot be a matter of improvisation. It must honour the seafaring tradition that defines our town. That is why, whether you’re savouring our traditional Mozarabic chicken on the Magic Select or the signature tapas inspired by the Salvaje restaurant on the Magic Dreams, we strive for the same integrity that local fishermen put into every catch.

The fair has once again shown us that Fuerteventura is best experienced with all five senses. If you weren’t able to make it along over the last few days, don’t worry: the spirit of our cuisine – that respect for the flavours of the sea and the local heritage – lives on in each of our daily trips.

Can you bring babies on our trips? The answer is yes, but there are some important considerations to ensure the safety of the little ones. Not all our boats are the same, and each has its own ‘ideal age’.

Magic Select and Aphrodite: These are the best options for families with babies (aged 0–1, who also travel free of charge). They are spacious boats where you can move about comfortably, and there are plenty of shaded areas.

Magic Dolphin: For safety reasons and due to the speed of the boat, children under the age of 2 are not permitted on this trip.

Magic Dreams: This is our peaceful retreat, so the minimum age is 12.

For those of you bringing young children on the Select or the Aphrodite, please remember to bring strong sun cream, a hat with a strap, and some warm clothes for the return journey, as the breeze out on the open sea can get chilly. We provide life jackets suitable for their weight and the full attention of our crew.

If you’re staying in the north, it’s natural to look at the map and think that heading down to Morro Jable is ‘quite a journey’. But those of us who live by the sea in Fuerteventura know that you haven’t truly experienced the island until you see how the colour of the water changes as you reach the south.

For us, March is the month of balance. The weather treats us to days with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 24°C, and the trade winds usually give us a break, leaving the ocean calm. It’s the perfect time for that road trip along the FV-2, which ends with a reward that the north, due to its geography, simply cannot offer.

Why head south when there are already boats in Corralejo?

It’s a question you might ask yourself, even though people come to visit us from all over the island, including from the far north. The answer lies in what you cannot see: the Jandía Abyss. Whilst the seabed is flatter in the north, here the continental shelf drops vertically just a few metres from the coast. It is a natural highway of nutrients that attracts resident species such as the tropical pilot whale and the bottlenose dolphin.

In Morro Jable, we don’t go out to ‘search’ for animals; we go out to encounter them because this is their home. As we sail through a Special Conservation Area (ZEC), the experience is far more unspoilt and wild.

Stress-free travel: logistics and fears

We know that driving 100 km can seem like a bit of a slog, but the journey itself is a sight to behold. A stop at the Mirador de Sotavento viewpoint before you reach the pier will give you the photo everyone wants.[3] If you don’t have a car, bus route 1 connects the island, although we always recommend hiring a car for greater flexibility.

And if you’re worried about feeling seasick after such a long drive, our catamarans, such as the Magic Select, are true havens of stability on the water thanks to their twin-hull design.

Which boat will you board when you arrive?

So you don’t waste time deciding when you see the masts in the harbour, here’s our handy decision tree:

Are you coming with the whole family and need plenty of space? Magic Select is the place for you. Total peace of mind and our famous Mozarabic chicken to recharge your batteries.

Looking for a peaceful atmosphere and signature cuisine? Head to Magic Dreams (12+). Enjoy an atmosphere of absolute tranquillity with gourmet tapas from one of Jandía’s finest chefs.

Are you short on time and just want to spot dolphins? The Magic Dolphin is all about agility. Two hours of adrenaline that’ll have you back up north by mid-afternoon.

Are you looking for an unforgettable sunset? Our Aphrodite Sunset tour will treat you to a truly special moment as you watch the colours of the sky and sea in Fuerteventura, whilst the sun’s rays slowly dip below the horizon, seeming to disappear beneath the water.

Crossing over to Fuerteventura for a sailing trip in Jandía isn’t just another day out; it’s the day you’ll understand why this island is a Biosphere Reserve. Our team will be waiting for you at the jetty, with everything ready for an unforgettable experience.

Fuerteventura is a long island, and we know you don’t always feel like driving or looking for a parking space in the port of Morro Jable (even though there are plenty of spaces available). We want your only worry to be putting on your sun cream, which is why our transport arrangements are designed to be seamless.

We offer a pick-up and drop-off service in the main tourist resorts in the south: Costa Calma, Esquinzo, Morro Jable and Jandía. We do not offer door-to-door pick-up from every hotel, as this would unnecessarily prolong the journey for everyone; instead, we have selected strategic meeting points within a 5-minute walk of most accommodation options.

Let’s be honest and open, just like the sea off Jandía. Going out with Magic & Sailing isn’t like visiting a theme park; it’s a real expedition into the habitat of wild animals. Up to 29 species of cetaceans live in or pass through our waters, and although the chances of spotting them are very high, nature doesn’t keep to office hours.

What if the dolphins decide not to show up on the day? Instead of a ‘quick snap’, you’ll get a lesson in marine life from our crew, who know every nook and cranny of this coastline. They’ll teach you how to read the clouds, understand the currents and discover the volcanic beauty of Jandía, which can only be appreciated from the sea.

Sailing with us means embracing the challenge of adventure. Spotting the whales is the reward, but the sailing itself, the gourmet food, a dip in the turquoise waters and the care provided by our crew are what make the day worthwhile, whether or not there are whales on the horizon.

It’s one of the questions we hear most often at the pier: “Captain, does the boat rock a lot?” It’s only natural; nobody wants their holiday ruined by a bit of seasickness. The good news is that, off the coast of Jandía, the physics are on your side if you choose the right boat.

Unlike motorboats or traditional monohulls, which ‘roll’ (sway) with every wave, boats such as the Magic Select (at 23 metres) and the Magic Deluxe or the Magic Dreams act as stable platforms on the water. With two separate hulls, the catamaran minimises that annoying side-to-side rocking.

If you’re the type who likes to play it safe, the Magic Select is the place for you: its large size makes it extremely stable. And a little tip from our crew: sit in the middle, keep your eyes on the Fuerteventura horizon and let the breeze do the rest. You’ll find that, within ten minutes, you’ll have forgotten you’re out on the Atlantic.

There is a moment on every Magic Dreams trip that stays etched in your memory: that instant when the catamaran comes to a halt, the engine falls silent, and all you can hear is the gentle lapping of the water against the hull of the Lagoon 43. We are anchored in one of Jandía’s sheltered bays, and here, blue is not just a colour; it is a state of mind.

Unlike other tours where everything seems to be timed down to the minute, on our most exclusive experience we want time to flow naturally. It’s not about how many minutes we spend standing still, but how you experience them.

Anchoring in calm waters: your own private playground

When we drop anchor in these crystal-clear waters, the boat becomes an extension of the ocean. As this experience is designed for those aged 12 and over, the atmosphere is one of absolute serenity. It’s time to leave your sandals on deck and jump into the water.

For those looking for a bit of action, our paddleboards are ready and waiting. There’s no better way to appreciate the volcanic silhouette of Fuerteventura than gliding across the water at your own pace. And if you’d rather see what’s happening beneath the surface, we’ll lend you snorkelling gear. The seabed at Morro Jable is a garden of volcanic rocks where grouper and white seabream swim in complete tranquillity.

Flavours that evoke the sea

Whilst you’re enjoying your swim, something special is being prepared in the Magic Dreams kitchen. We wanted the cuisine to match the scenery, which is why we’re serving a selection of gourmet tapas created by the team at the Salvaje restaurant.

Forget run-of-the-mill buffets. Here, we’re talking about bites designed to complement the sea breeze: local produce prepared with creativity and served with the kind of care that only a small team can provide. It is, quite possibly, the best pairing you’ll find on the whole island: signature cuisine, a glass of chilled cava, and the Jandía skyline as the only backdrop.

Design that promotes relaxation

If you’d rather stay dry, the design of our new Lagoon 43 is your best friend. These boats are designed so that the boundary between the interior and the deck is virtually non-existent. You can relax in the shaded lounge and still feel as though you’re right by the sea.

Our crew know every nook and cranny of this coastline and know the best time for each activity, depending on the wind and the tide.
