If you\u2019re staying in the north, it\u2019s natural to look at the map and think that heading down to Morro Jable is \u2018quite a journey\u2019. But those of us who live by the sea in Fuerteventura know that you haven\u2019t truly experienced the island until you see how the colour of the water changes as you reach the south. <\/p>\n\n
For us, March is the month of balance. The weather treats us to days with temperatures ranging from 18\u00b0C to 24\u00b0C, and the trade winds usually give us a break, leaving the ocean calm. It\u2019s the perfect time for that road trip along the FV-2, which ends with a reward that the north, due to its geography, simply cannot offer. <\/p>\n\n
It\u2019s a question you might ask yourself, even though people come to visit us from all over the island, including from the far north. The answer lies in what you cannot see: the Jand\u00eda Abyss. Whilst the seabed is flatter in the north, here the continental shelf drops vertically just a few metres from the coast. It is a natural highway of nutrients that attracts resident species such as the tropical pilot whale and the bottlenose dolphin. <\/p>\n\n
In Morro Jable, we don\u2019t go out to \u2018search\u2019 for animals; we go out to encounter them because this is their home. As we sail through a Special Conservation Area (ZEC), the experience is far more unspoilt and wild. <\/p>\n\n
We know that driving 100 km can seem like a bit of a slog, but the journey itself is a sight to behold. A stop at the Mirador de Sotavento viewpoint before you reach the pier will give you the photo everyone wants.[3] If you don\u2019t have a car, bus route 1 connects the island, although we always recommend hiring a car for greater flexibility. <\/p>\n\n
