Why do we see pilot whales and beaked whales so close to the coast?
Sometimes, whilst out on one of our boat trips, we come across animals that seem to prefer calm waters to acrobatics: pilot whales and the mysterious beaked whales. The reason we are able to see these ‘elite divers’ so close to Morro Jable is that the seabed beneath us is fascinating.
Just a few kilometres off the coast, the continental shelf drops away into underwater canyons that plunge vertically into the abyss. These deep valleys are home to squid and other cephalopods, the favourite food of these giants.
