The May bank holiday is approaching, and the sea around Fuerteventura is at its most vibrant. If you’re planning a getaway for the holiday, there’s a fascinating scientific reason to choose a boat trip: the ocean is ‘waking up’.
Between February and April, the layer of water separating the cold depths from the warm surface (the thermocline) becomes thinner. This allows nutrients from the seabed to rise to the surface, creating a burst of microscopic life that attracts all kinds of animals.
This is the time of year when we usually spot large fin whales passing through and dolphins more active than ever. What’s more, the water temperature is perfect, always inviting a peaceful and enjoyable dip at our anchorage stops.
