A short story about human reliability and expertise versus marine technology.
Often, when a pod of bottlenose dolphins suddenly appears alongside the hull, passengers ask us in amazement whether we use radar or sonar to locate them. The answer is a resounding ‘no’. As a certified Blue Boat, we avoid any technology that might emit noise or vibrations that could disturb the animals in their own habitat.
Our secret is far older and more human: it is instinct and craftsmanship. The deck crew doesn’t just watch the horizon; they interpret the signs the ocean gives us. A subtle change in the colour of the water, the frantic flight of shearwaters or a particular current tell us where there is life.
We have been exploring the coast of Jandía since 1995, and it is this hard-won knowledge that enables us to encounter our fellow travellers in a natural and respectful way, with an exceptionally high success rate. Here, the magic comes from the Atlantic, but it’s our crew who have the keen eye to spot it.
