The beach of Cofete
Located on the Jandía peninsula, at the southern tip of the island of Fuerteventura, this unspoilt beach stretches for about 14 kilometres and is approximately 50 metres wide. Part of its charm lies in its isolation and difficult access. Although it is only 20 kilometres from Morro Jable, the journey there can take about 45 minutes. An initial road gives way to a dirt track that eventually leads to a car park from where this wonderful destination can be reached on foot.
Cofete Beach welcomes visitors with its wild character: it is windy, with strong currents and impressive waves. From there, we can observe the fusion of natural colours: the ochre crests of the Jandía Natural Park mingle with the reddish rocks, which give way to the golden sand, the white of the foam of the waves and the different shades of blue of the Atlantic Ocean, which intertwine with the sky.
Winter House and the cemetery of Cofete
In addition to the natural majesty of the beach, two constructions capture the attention of visitors: the Winter House and the Cofete cemetery.
Winter House
Owned by the German engineer Gustav Winter, this villa is shrouded in mystery and secrecy. According to local legends and myths, this building is said to have served as a supply base for Nazi submarines during World War II. Although this theory has no scientific basis and has been denied by the Winter family, it is a widespread hypothesis in Fuerteventura, where some even speak of the supposed existence of underwater tunnels connecting the house to the sea.
The cemetery of Cofete
Next to the car park is a place that, although disused since the middle of the 20th century, is truly unique: the Cofete cemetery. Built in the 19th century, this cemetery is surrounded by a stone wall just over 40 centimetres high. Inside, wooden crosses mingle with tombs half-buried in the sand, and the smell of saltpetre permeates the surroundings.

The Jandía peninsula offers excellent hiking opportunities. There are several trails leading from the beach into the mountains, providing spectacular views and the opportunity to see the local flora and fauna. One of the most popular routes is the trail that leads to Pico de la Zarza, the highest point of Fuerteventura, from where you can get breathtaking panoramic views of the island and the Atlantic Ocean.
Wildlife observation
Cofete Beach and its surroundings are home to various species of birds and other wildlife. Visitors can enjoy bird watching and, if they are lucky, spot some of the rarer species that inhabit this region. Among the most common birds are the Houbara bustard and the raven, while in the sea dolphins and monk seals can occasionally be seen.
