There is something about the south of Fuerteventura that cannot be explained by photos alone. Those of us who sail these waters every day know that the coast of Jandía has a different energy, and it is no coincidence. If you want to see dolphins and whales in the wild, the port of Morro Jable is not just a starting point; it is possibly the best natural balcony in the whole of the Canary Islands for observing wildlife.
But why here and not somewhere else? The answer lies not on the surface, but hundreds of metres beneath our boots.
An abyss just around the corner
What makes Morro Jable special is its invisible geography. While on other islands you have to sail miles and miles to find depth, here the underwater platform drops vertically almost as soon as you leave the harbour. We have deep canyons and trenches just a stone’s throw from the coast.
These depths are the ‘highways’ travelled by large mammals. As a Special Area of Conservation (ZEC), animals find refuge here, away from the noise of industrial traffic. That’s why it’s not uncommon to encounter some of the 29 species that inhabit or pass through the islands, from the noble bottlenose dolphin to the imposing pilot whales, on a trip lasting just a couple of hours.
Sailing without haste: the protocol of respect
At Magic & Sailing, we don’t see the sea as a scripted show. We operate under the ‘Blue Flag’ banner, which in everyday terms means something very simple: they’re in charge. We respect distances, turn off our engines when sailing allows us to, and let the dolphins decide whether to come and play in our wake.
It is ethical sailing that aims to ensure that, when you return to land, you feel like you have been a guest in their home, not an intruder.
How would you like your souvenir to be?
Not everyone is looking for the same thing when they board a boat, which is why our fleet in Morro Jable is so varied. The key is to choose the pace that suits you best:
- If you’re looking for closeness and adrenaline: The Magic Dolphin boat and excursion are pure agility. It’s two hours of active searching, perfect if you want to maximise your chances of sightings and feel the sea spray up close.
- If you’re coming with your family and want space: Take a trip on our 23-metre super catamaran, Magic Select. It’s so stable that any fear of seasickness will stay behind at the dock. The plan here includes anchoring to swim and savour our classic Mozarabic chicken with rice.
- If you prefer silence and exclusivity: The Magic Dreams and Magic Deluxe luxury catamaran excursions are a different story. Only 12 people aboard our Lagoons 43 and 450S. It’s the closest thing to having your own boat, with a chef’s menu that is a far cry from the usual catering on mass excursions.
A sea that teaches you to look
In the end, as our captains always say, the ocean guarantees nothing, but Jandía always gives you something. It might be the leap of a common dolphin, the blow of a fin whale, or simply that silence that can only be found when you turn off the engine and let yourself be carried away by the wind.
Choosing Morro Jable means choosing nature on your own terms. If you are in the south, we will be waiting for you at the pier to share some authentic sea time.
